Publishing Professionals. Sylvia is a Motivational Speaker and CEO of S. P. Flanagan Entertainment , L LC, a multi faceted media company. In 2007, Sylvia moved into a full-time role at S.P. Flanagan Entertainment, LLC after completing a 35- year career with the Johnson Publishing Co. Throughout her time with the Johnson Publishing Co., Sylvia advanced through the ranks from editorial assistant to Senior Editor of Jet Magazine, the most widely read African American magazine in the world. As Senior Editor, Sylvia authored weekly favorites including, “Movies To See”, “Now Playing”, and the Jet “Beauty of the Week”. Through her role as Senior Editor, Sylvia was able to reorganize and change the mission of Jet’s “Television” program listings page in order to increase the visibility of African American actors. In addition, Sylvia also redesigned the research standards and methodology for the Jet music charts to ensure that an increasing number of African American recording artists were able to advance their careers. As an editor and author, Sylvia contributed to the highly acclaimed biography of Bill Cosby, Bill Cosby In Words and Pictures, on which she collaborated with Robert E. Johnson, the late Associate Publisher and Executive Editor of Jet. Sylvia has been vastly recognized for her contributions to the Publishing Community. She is the recipient of such prestigious awards as the Golden Trumpet “Tower of Power” Award; Harold Washington Professional Achievement Award; International Who’s Who; as well as recognition by The Association of Mannequins as one of the 10 Best Dressed African American Women Sylvia received her Masters Degree in Journalism from Roosevelt University as well as her Bachelors Degree in Journalism from Chicago State University. In recognition of her significant accomplishments, Ms. Flanagan has received a host of awards that more recently include a 2002 citywide proclamation in her honor issued by Mayor James K. Khan of the City of Los Angeles, and the prestigious Trumpet Award’s “Tower of Power” award that was presented to her in 2002 by the esteemed Xernona Clayton in Atlanta at the annual fete. Additional achievements include being named to International Who’s Who and recognition by The Association of Mannequins™ as one of the “10 Best Dressed African American Women.
