Grant D. Shifflett, MD

Grant D. Shifflett, MD, is being recognized by Continental Who’s Who as a Top Orthopedic Spine Surgeon in the field of Medicine and for his dedication and commitment to quality orthopedic care with DISC Sports & Spine Center.

As a trusted and board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon, Dr. Shifflett began practicing medicine in 2016 after completing his residency and fellowship training. He offers a vast repertoire of experience and expertise in the application of minimally invasive and microsurgical techniques to the entire spectrum of cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spinal conditions, from the simple to the most complex. In his current capacity, he was handpicked by Dr. Robert S. Bray Jr. to join DISC Sports & Spine Center and has since then continued to strive to restore each patient’s functionality and quality of life at the Marina Del Rey and Newport Beach locations. He takes pride in seeing patients who are in their most fragile, debilitated state and returning them to the things they love. Dr. Shifflett demonstrates the highest level of professionalism and integrity when treating his patients, and his patients recognize him to be very informative, compassionate, and kind. Alongside his role at the DISC Sports & Spine Center, Dr. Shifflet holds academic appointments at Marshall B. Ketchum University and Western University of Health Sciences.

An academic scholar, Dr. Shifflett received a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience with high honors from the University of Virginia before graduating with the highest distinction from the University of Southern California, Keck School of Medicine. He then completed a general surgery internship at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/New York Weill Cornell Medical Center and an orthopedic residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS). During his time at HSS, Dr. Shifflett completed an enfolded traveling fellowship in Japan, where he pediatric deformity and complex cervical spinal surgery under the guidance of some of the world’s top cervical and lumbar spine surgeons.

Subsequently, he went on to complete his training with an adult and pediatric spinal surgery fellowship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.

Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Shifflett has garnered a well-deserving reputation for his expert medical knowledge. He remains abreast of the latest advancements in his field by maintaining active in several spine societies and spine journals. He has numerous publications on minimally invasive and reconstructive spine surgery and has authored two chapters in the textbook “Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery.” Additionally, he has received multiple grants to perform large-scale clinical trials and his research has been presented throughout the United States and internationally in six different countries.

As a testament to his professional excellence, Dr. Shifflett is the recipient of several awards and accolades throughout his career. In 2019, he received the North American Spine Society 20 under 40 Award, and the Young Surgeon Travel Fellow Grant – “State of Surgery Think Tank” in Aruba.

In his spare time, Dr. Shifflett is a sports enthusiast and enjoys golfing, as well as traveling and drinking wine. He also enjoys spending time with his family, including his wife Whitney and their two beautiful, smart, caring girls — Isla and Vivienne.

Dr. Shifflett has had incredible mentors through his residency and fellowship training and dedicates his success to them. He dedicates this honorable recognition to Dr. Robert Bray, who has been instrumental in his professional practice growth and continues to challenge him daily. He also dedicates this to Dr. Frank Phillips, Dr. Howard On, Dr. Kern Singh, and Dr. Bernard.

In looking to the future, Dr. Shifflet intends to continue to grow his practice, deliver outstanding, reproducible patient outcomes, and advance the field of minimally invasive spine surgery.
