Mary Voorhess, MD, is being recognized by Continental Who’s Who as a Top Pediatric Endocrinologist in the field of Medicine and acknowledgment of her professional experience as a Professor Emerita, Dept. of Pediatrics, College of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, State University of New York at Buffalo, as Co-Chief of the Division of Endocrinology at Children’s Hospital of Buffalo.
Having led an outstanding career in medicine, Dr. Voorhess has demonstrated the highest level of professionalism and integrity as one of the first 15 Pediatric Endocrinologists to have an academic appointment. She offers a vast repertoire of extensive training and expertise in pediatric endocrinology and research on neuroblastoma. In her research studies, she measured Norepinephrine and Epinephrine in urine and found that there were no normal values from children. She helped to establish normal values for children. Additionally, she conducted research on the Melanoma synthetic pathway and injected a tumor in a hamster to measure the Dopa in the urine. She found that there was a high Dopa value, and that marked the first time Dopa was high in the urine of a hamster with melanoma. This discovery led to the development of a medication from Merck to block Dopa transmission. Among her professional experiences, Dr. Voorhess served as the acting chairman of the Department of Pediatrics in Syracuse, Buffalo.
To prepare for her distinguished role, Dr. Voorhess obtained her Doctor of Medicine degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Zoology from the University of Texas (Austin), and later became an RN after graduating from City Hospital School of Nursing in Binghamton, NY.
In recognition of her academic excellence, she received a Research Career Development Award from the National Cancer Institute (NIH), and the Dean’s Award for Service to the University from SUNY Buffalo.
