Craig M. Shannon, MD, FAANS, is being recognized by Continental Who’s Who as a Top Surgeon in the field of Neurosurgery in acknowledgment for his devotion to patient-centered care as a Neurosurgeon with Brain & Spine Surgeons of New York.

Highly respected neurosurgeon, Dr. Shannon was born in Manhattan, New York but grew up in the small town of Zanesville, Ohio. Throughout his acclaimed career, he has garnered 13 years of extensive training and professional experience in all aspects of

Neurosurgery including cranial neurosurgery, trauma, and spine surgery. In his current appointment at BSSNY, Dr. Shannon demonstrates an innate ability to transform lives with a caring and compassionate approach. He is also an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at New York Medical College continuously sharing his breadth of expertise.

To prepare for his career, Dr. Shannon attended Miami University in Oxford Ohio where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2002. Soon thereafter, he graduated from the University of Toledo College of Medicine with his Medical degree in 2007. In that same year, he began his training in Neurosurgery at the Westchester Medical Center/New York Medical College. During his training, he was appointed Chief Resident at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Manhattan, completed an Infolded spine fellowship at Westchester Medical Center, and completed a Chief Resident year at Westchester Medical Center. He graduated from his residency program in June of 2016 and joined the BSSNY Neurosurgery group. In August 2017, Dr. Shannon was appointed Chief and Medical Director of Neurosurgery at Vassar Brothers Hospital.

Remaining abreast of the latest industry advancements, Dr. Shannon has maintained active memberships with the several professional organizations, including the Sigma Chi Fraternity (Alpha Chapter): Life Loyal Sig, American Medical Association, American College of Physicians, Ohio State Medical Association, Florida Medical Association, New York State Neurosurgical Society, American Academy of Neurological Surgeons, and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.

In light of his professional achievements and award-winning research, Dr. Shannon is the recipient of several awards. He was awarded the 2011NREF/DePuy Spine Research Fellow and in May 2015 he presented research at the American Association of Neurological Surgeons Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. Additionally, he is the recipient of the 2011- Dr. Del Guercio First Place Research Award and the 2011- New York State Society 2nd Place Research Award.

Dr. Shannon is the son of a private practice Neurosurgeon and his mother is a registered nurse. He has two sisters, a twin sister, and a younger sister.
