Carl A. Olsson, MD, FACS

Carl A. Olsson, MD, FACS, is being recognized by Continental Who’s Who as a Pinnacle Lifetime Achiever in the field of Medicine as the Chief Medical Officer at Integrated Medical Professionals (IMP) and the Director of Quality Assurance and Strategy in the Department of Urology at Mt. Sinai Hospital.

Leading an impressive career for more than five decades, Dr. Olsson is an internationally-renowned urologist. He specializes in all aspects of urologic oncology, including cancers of the prostate, bladder, and kidneys.

Over the course of his career, he has held various prominent positions, including Chief of Urology and Chief of the Squier Urological Clinic at New York Presbyterian Hospital, John K. Lattimer Professor and Chairman of Urology at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, Professor & Department Chairman of Urology at Boston University School of Medicine, Urologist-in-Chief at University Hospital of Boston, Director of the Urology Department at Boston City Hospital, and Chief of the Urology Section of Veterans Administration Medical Center in Boston.

In preparation for his career, Dr. Olsson earned a Doctorate of Medicine degree at Boston University in 1963. For his post-education training, he worked at Boston University and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He has continued to remain up-to-date on changes in the field of urology through his affiliations with organizations, serving as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the New York Academy of Medicine. He is the former President of the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons, the American Board of Urology, Society of University Urologists, Society of Urologic Oncology, Clinical Society of Genitourinary Surgeons, and New York Section of the American Urological Association.

Dr. Olsson has had many notable accomplishments throughout his career. Having authored over 400 publications, he has amassed an enviable record as a pillar in his field.

In 1973, he was the first to use an alpha sympathetic blockade in urinary outlet obstruction. The following decade, he led the initiative in continent urinary diversion-coined the term ‘orthotopic neobladder’, was the first to describe the use of absorbable staples to create urine pouches and neobladders and served as SUO representative to the National Cancer Advisory Board.

Throughout the 1990s, he remained at the forefront of his field, having published chapters in serial issues of Campbell’s Urology, was elected to the Advisory Council of the NIDDK and co-authored the first description of PSA Density.

His strides for excellent patient-care did not cease in the following decades, serving on the Executive Committee of the Prostate Cancer Research Program of the Department of Defense, chairing the Prostate Integration Panel of the DOD, and having had many more accomplishments while continuing to remain active in clinical research trials.

As a testament to his success, Dr. Olsson has received numerous awards and recognitions. These include awards from the U.S. State Department and American Medical Association for service in Project Vietnam, the Presidential Merit Award from the Dominican Republic, the Michael E. Debakey Award from Baylor College of Medicine, the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Boston University, the Ferdinand Valentine Medal Award from the NY Academy of Medicine, several CapCURE Research Awards, and several more from the American Urological Association, including the Hugh Hampton Young, Gold Cystoscope, and John K. Lattimer Awards.

When Dr. Olsson has free time, he enjoys boating and sailboat racing.
