Nelson Handal, MD, DFAPA is recognized by Continental Who’s Who as a Pinnacle Lifetime Member in the field of Medicine

With over thirty years of experience in the field of medicine, Nelson Handal, MD, DFAPA is an expert in mental health services and is a national consultant and speaker on child and adolescent psychiatry.
Board Certified in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and General Adult Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, throughout the course of his education and training, Dr. Handal attended Ruprecht Karl University of Heidelberg and the Universidad Mayor de San Andres, Facultad de Ciencias la Salud where he earned his MD. Thereafter, Dr. Handal would go on to complete his residency training in General Psychiatry at the State University of New York Health Science Center in Syracuse, New York, followed by his fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Miami School of Medicine.
Licensed to practice in Alabama and Florida, Dr. Handal is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and member of several prominent organizations including the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Alabama Psychiatric Physicians Association, and American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology. A Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association since 2009, Dr. Handal is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
In recognition of his many professional achievements, Dr. Handal was the honorary recipient and rewarded with inclusion into the premier ranks of the Leading Physicians of the World. He has received several honorary awards, including the Child and Adolescent Clinical Scholar Award of the University of Miami, National, Excellence in Public Mental Health Award by the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) (2008), Mental Health America Award by Heroes in the Fight, (2009), and Humanitarian Award by VOCAL (Victims of Crime and Clemency)
Southern Region (2010). Dr. Handal was included three times
into the Guide to America’s Top Psychiatrists of the Consumers’ Research Council of America (2007-2009).
Dr. Handal dedicates this recognition to Mantosh Dewan, MD – Distinguished Service Professor and Former Dean of Upstate New York Medical School; to Jon Shaw, MD - his director of training in Miami; to Bessel Van Der Kolk, MD, David Keith, MD and Prakash Masand, MD who inspired him with their vast knowledge; to his spectacular and loyal staff and fellow psychiatrists for their excellent and dedicated service.
