Dr. J. Claude Bennett is being recognized by Continental Who’s Who as a Lifetime Achiever in the field of medicine for his role as a Immunologist/Rheumatologist/Medical Educator (Retired) at the UAB School of Medicine.
With a career spanning over five decades, Dr. Bennett had worked for the School of Medicine at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. He began at the university in 1958, working as an intern where he went on to become a resident from 1960-1964. Dr. Bennett was a molecular biology research associate with the National Institutes of Health. He then returned to UAB as an assistant director for the division of clinical immunology and rheumatology, where, since 1992 he served as the Spencer Professor of Medical Science at the university.
In addition to his work with UAB, Dr. Bennett also provided his services as a science advisory board member of the Merek Sharp & Dohme Corp. He is also involved in the medical community as a member of the governing board for the American Board of Internal Medicine. He was also a visiting professor for the University of Missouri, Leiden University in the Netherlands, Baylor College, Weill Cornell Medicine, and the University of Colorado Boulder.
Dr. Bennett received an exceptional education from Harvard University, where he earned his MD, and holds a Bachelor’s degree from Samford University, as well as receiving his honorary DSc from the University of Alabama.
Throughout his professional career, Dr. Bennett has maintained memberships with a wide variety of organizations. He is a member with the American Academy of Microbiology, The American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians, the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, The American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Royal Society of Medicine London as well as honorary membership with Ludwig Heilmeyer Society in Germany.
Dr. Bennett holds numerous awards; his most recent recognition was the 2000 Kober Medal from the Association of American Physicians and the 2000 Carol Nachman Medal from the German Society of Rheumatology.
When Dr. Bennett isn’t working, he enjoys traveling and following politics.
