An academic scholar, Dr. Smitherman completed his undergraduate studies at Texas Tech University with his Bachelor of Science degree. His acclaimed career began after he received his medical degree in 1998 from the University of Texas Medical Branch-Galveston.

Following graduation, he went on to complete his training internship and residency in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, Texas.

In his 23 years of practice, Dr. Smitherman has remained abreast of the latest advancements in his field as a member of various associations including the American Medical Association (AMA), American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), Texas Medical Association (TMA) and the Lubbock-Garza-Crosby County Medical Association.

A respected voice in his field, Dr. Smitherman has written for his various publications such as the “Evaluation of Effects of Tourniquet Uses on Thigh Circumferences”, “Four Year Follow Up Study of First Metatareal Silicone Implant Arthroplastics for Treatment of Arthritic Foot Conditions” and “Gait Analysis of Children with Healed Congential Pseudarthrosis of the Tibia”.

Recognized as a Super Doctor, Dr. Smitherman has been the recipient of many awards and accolades throughout his career. He has been honored by the Mu Delta Honor Society, named Resident of the Month (March 1996), Presidential Nominee to The University of Texas System Board of Regent’s Student Advisory Group, and more.
