Daniel G. Petereit, MD, FASTRO

Daniel G. Petereit, MD, FASTRO, is being recognized by Continental Who’s Who as a Pinnacle Lifetime Achiever in the field of Medicine as a Radiation Oncologist at the Cancer Care Institute at Monument Health in Rapid City, SD.

Leading an impressive career for three decades, Dr. Petereit has served the last twenty years at the Rapid City Regional Hospital’s Cancer Care Institute. He is the medical director of research and the principal investigator on several grants funded through the National Care Institute. He works alongside a multidisciplinary team comprised of radiation and medical oncologists and comprehensive support services.

Throughout his career, Dr. Petereit has garnered a laudable reputation for his expertise and compassion. His areas of expertise include clinical trials for cancer disparities, and brachytherapy. A noted humanitarian, he developed the NCI-funded Walking Forward Program in 2002. It addresses the high cancer and mortality rates amongst American Indians living in western South Dakota. Monument Health in Rapid City serves approximately seventy thousand American Indians living in the urban areas and on the Pine Ridge, Rosebud, and Cheyenne River Reservations.

Dr. Petereit’s medical career was inspired by his father Dr. Frank Petereit, who also worked to help improve the lives of underserved populations. His father was born in poverty, lost his father at the age of five, and was placed in a boys’ home. Despite these disparities, he completed medical school and embarked on a humanitarian career.

To prepare for his career, Dr. Petereit earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in general biology from Augustana University. Then, he attended the University of South Dakota Medical School for a Doctor of Medicine degree. He went on to complete a residency in radiation oncology at the University of Wisconsin and additional training in gynecologic oncology and head and neck cancer at the Maryland Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Petereit later became a recipient of 15 million dollars in funding from the National Cancer Institute. He remains aware of the latest developments in his field, serving as a fellow of the American Society for Radiation Oncology.

To stay up to date in his field as a Radiation Oncologist, Dr. Petereit is a Fellow of the American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), and is the current President of the American Brachytherapy Society (ABS). He is also a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the Board examiner for the American Board of Radiology (ABR) .

When he is not working, Dr. Petereit enjoys spending time with his parents Frank and Illey, wife Jean, and four children.

Dr. Petereit dedicates this recognition to his mentors Dr. Paul Harari, Dr. Minesh Mehta, and Dr. C. Norman Coleman, and also wants to acknowledge his wife Jean for her ongoing love and support.
